*CLST 303.001 Identity and Culture “The Disability Culture Industry” W 3:30-6 Chris Bell
This course draws from the idea of the culture industry as explained by Max Horkheimer and Theodor Adorno, applying that theory to a critique of cultural representations of “disability” and “disabled” bodies. Class discussions and readings will focus on the development of a “disability culture” in tandem with and in opposition to “mainstream culture.” We will also address the politics of identity, identification, and disidentification in relation to the production and maintenance of disabled bodies.
*CLST 305.001 Textuality and Culture "Women Detectives in Contemporary American Popular Culture." Its WMST number is 370. MW 12:30-1:45 Debbie Shaller
The hard-boiled woman detective occupies a special place in both the popular lexicon of detection and in marking phenomena that include fiction, internet sites, television shows, and film. This course will explore novels and other popular instances of American women investigators whose textual entanglements both aid and obstruct their feminism. Works under consideration include novels by Sara Peretsky, Janet Evanovich, Eleanor Taylor Bland, and others; tv's Veronica Mars and CSI; and related contemporary films.
