About the College

College of Health Professions Strategic Plan 2008-2011

The College of Health Professions serves as a major educational, research and outreach resource for health and well-being in the university, the community, and state of Maryland.

TU 2010 Theme:  Student Experience and Success

Goals: 

a. Enhance educational experiences

b. Engage students in off-campus experiences

c. Support initiatives that promote diversity

CHP THEME 1

Graduates who excel in their ability to contribute to their respective health and sport-related professions, communities, and workforce needs of Maryland and the region.

Goals

Students and graduates who demonstrate:

  • Commitment to life-long learning, professionalism, and ethical principles
  • Productive interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Appreciation and respect for diversitytechnological skills to compete in a global society

Action Plans

  • Enhance the effectiveness of our diversity initiatives by implementing a diversity plan for the College and for all Departments/units with a focus on faculty/staff hiring and retention, student recruitment and success, and cultural competence in professional roles.
  • Support preparation of students for entry into the workplace in professional roles 
    • Ensure that courses and labs provide student access to educational experiences, equipment and technology used in professional work
    • Develop a College-wide student orientation process with a focus on professionalism and ethics, including a formal oath for student signature
    • Develop interdisciplinary College-wide annual event for students focusing on ethics and professional integrity
    • Explore development of one-three credit interdisciplinary senior seminar
    • Expand roles for interdisciplinary student participation in CHP mass casualty exercise to include three or more disciplines in a way that reflect future professional roles
    • Develop specific plans to support students in completing a major or minor in another language with a CHP major
    • Increase student involvement in state and national professional organizations via membership, presentations, and/or holding office
  • Increase CHP students’ exposure to international health and sport issues via participation in academic opportunities and number of students attending by 25%
  • Support post-baccalaureate education of professionals
    • Increase enrollment in graduate programs by 10% overall
    • Increase number of CHP-sponsored events that award CEUs for faculty, alumni, internship/preceptor supervisors, and the surrounding professional community to five annually

 

TU 2010 Theme: Enrollment Management, Growth and Mix

Goal: a. Develop select programs to meet workforce needs

CHP THEME  2

Dynamic academic programs that address the health and wellness workforce needs of the state and region, as well as the university’s enrollment growth.

Goals

  • Ongoing accreditation and enhancement of existing programs’ strengths
  • Development of new undergraduate and graduate programs to complement existing majors and to meet current and emerging workforce needs.
  • Continued focus on courses and knowledge related to health and wellness for non-majors (General Education courses, minors, electives)
  • Expanded use of distance education technologies to provide alternate venues for student education where appropriate

Action Plans

  • Meet all accreditation, certification, and program review requirements
  • To address workforce needs and maximize use of resources, increase collaborative degree programs at all degree levels:
    • With other Towson University colleges

                                   Post-baccalaureate certificate in Autism Studies

                                   Post-baccalaureate certificate in Health Emergency Preparedness

                                   Applied Nutrition & Food Safety

    • With other academic institutions

  • Significantly enhance or expand programs within the College
    • CHP involvement with the Honors College program via development of courses, seminars, and specific plans for each undergraduate major
    • Undergraduate and graduate aging/gerontology programs
    • Structure and organization of the collaborative Physician Assistant Program
  • To address workforce needs and enrollment growth, explore development of new programs
    • One or more doctoral programs
    • One or more masters programs and/or post-baccalaureate certificate programs in health related area(s) and/or in sport area(s)
    • One or more dual enrollment allied health programs
    • An undergraduate degree program focused on preparing students to work with individuals with disabilities, including autism and developmental disabilities
    • A course/courses at the undergraduate level that focus on autism and working with individuals of all ages with autism
    • A program and/or courses that fit the School of Technology’ focus, particularly relative to the health and well-being of people in their communities
    • Relationships with agencies/companies/businesses that support the educational mission of the College for degree programs and/or post-professional non-degree education (e.g., High-tech educational delivery, internships, student research experiences)
  • To address workforce needs, access to programs, and enrollment growth, increase use of technology and distance learning in teaching by
    • Adding one or more fully online academic programs (e.g., screened cohort program in Healthcare Management)
    • Increasing the number of fully online course offerings by 25%
    • Increasing the number of hybrid course offerings by 25%
    • Meeting the Quality Matters course certification requirements in online courses
  • To address workforce needs in specific geographic areas of the State, explore expanded use of the USM Hagerstown Center and Harford Community College/HEAT Center, Harford County

 

 

TU 2010 Theme: Resources for Success

Goal: a. Enhance recruitment, retention and development opportunities for faculty

CHP THEME  3

High quality faculty, who demonstrate excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service in health and sport.

 Goals

  • Contributions to emerging knowledge and its application for health and well-being of our communities
  • Appropriate number and mix of faculty to effectively meet academic scholarship service goals of the College
  • Enhanced faculty development activities and resources and faculty recognition for contribution
  • Increased external funding  (10% annually)

Action Plans

  • Support professional development for faculty
    • In Teaching via

                            Professional development focused on the applications of technology in the

                            professions
                            A College-wide event annually for faculty to promote teaching quality, including the                             use of cutting edge technology for teaching

    • In Scholarship via

                            A college-wide event annually for faculty regarding research program development                              and dissemination of scholarship

                           A college-wide event annually on grant writing

                           Expansion of number of tenured/tenure-track faculty participating in the external                                           mentor award program

                            Allocation of research assistants to faculty with grant-writing plans, particularly those

                            with research grant plans

    • In Service and Leadership via support of programs that address leadership skills and other service-related areas
  • Support Clinical Faculty in the College via
    • Completion of the College PRM document for Clinical Faculty and obtain University approvals; assure Department document congruence
    • Assuring that new clinical faculty, visiting faculty, and lecturers have an orientation that focuses on the University and the College.
  • Ensure faculty recognition for accomplishments via
    • Announcement of accomplishments in appropriate venues
    • Development of a faculty awards and recognition ceremony/celebration
  • Promote strategic hiring of faculty and staff to support program development and enrollment growth
  • Increase grant/contract submissions by 10% annually and receipt of awards to achieve annual goal of $1.6M

 

TU 2010 Theme: Partnerships Philosophy

Goals: a. Serve and continue to evolve as workforce engine for the State

             b. Expand outreach efforts to address social issues within the State

             c. Establish new partnerships

CHP THEME  4

College-wide Institute For Well-Being that promotes campus and community connections with students, faculty and staff across disciplines. 

Goals

  • Promotion of healthy, active, engaged living in the community for individuals with varying levels of ability
  • Development of new or strengthened relationships with community organizations and the Towson Four institutions
  • Creation and support of interdisciplinary and collaborative learning opportunities, research opportunities, and grant funding
  • Support of policies for healthy communities and area organizations that promote health and well-being

Action Plans

  • Develop the Institute for Well-being’s structure with its associated Centers and resource plans
  • Ensure congruence and success of each Center within the Institute
    • Assure that all Centers have congruent missions and strategic plans with College mission and strategic plan and appropriate operating structures
    • Complete the development of the Center for Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders, including the business plan and substantially increase the Center’s activities and funding
    • Enhance programs, partnerships, and financial structure of the Wellness Center
    • Enhance the Wellness Center’s role in student education, research, and outreach by adding a medical fitness component in collaboration with SJMC
    • Develop the Center for Health promotion Initiatives (with funding)
  • Develop a minimum of three community-desired, key health/well-being initiatives in Cherry Hill, including Harbor Hospital as feasible.
  • Strengthen relationships with the Towson Four institutions through new student and faculty initiatives
  • Enhance program and resources for students and professionals related to health-related emergency preparedness

 

 

TU 2010 Theme: Resources for Success

Goal: a. Expand and improve infrastructure

CHP THEME  5

Comprehensive and up-to-date infrastructure to support  the College’s mission and goals.

Goals

  • Academic and administrative structures that effectively support ongoing and emerging priorities
  • An appropriate number and mix of faculty and staff to support the College’s academic and  outreach priorities
  • Cutting edge technology to support student learning, research, service, faculty development and community engagement
  • Appropriate physical resources to support existing and planned academic and outreach growth

Action Plans

  • Develop a School of Nursing with an appropriate administrative structure and resources
  • Determine appropriate administrative structures needed to support new and expanding academic programs year round, including the academic semesters and summer trimesters.
  • Develop a plan for each Department relative to addition of faculty and staff positions associated with enrollment growth over the next three years and obtain positions to address priorities
  • Assure continuing professional development of staff in support of academic, scholarship, service and outreach activities of the College
  • Ensure adequate and appropriate space for all academic programs, centers, and faculty/staff of the college
  • Upgrade classroom technology and support training of faculty and staff in its use

 

TU 2010 Theme: Telling and Selling the Story

Goals: a. Convey Towson’s message to external community

              b. Solicit feedback from graduates and employers to measure success

CHP THEME 6

Strong alumni relations and visible public image within health and wellness communities.

Goals

  • Strengthened and increased alumni relationships
  • Enhanced communications with alumni, current and prospective faculty and students, professional communities and the public
  • Increased gifts to the College, including scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students throughout the College

Action Plans

  • Create a College Professional Advisory Board
  • Increase quantity and quality of communication to external and internal audiences regarding accomplishments and collaborative possibilities with the college by employing a communications director with responsibility for:
    • Producing an annual external publication highlighting events and accomplishments
    • Developing an internal faculty/staff newsletter to publicize projects, activities, awards and opportunities for collaboration
    • Creating enhanced webpage information and email newsletter about department, program and faculty activities/accomplishments
  • Increase alumni involvement in the college’s activities
    • Hold annual alumni events in each department and for College
    • Increase alumni attendance at College and departmental events and awards and recognition ceremonies
  • Increase gifts to the College in areas that benefit students, faculty development, and outreach to the community
    • Increase scholarships for both undergraduate and graduate students
    • Increase donor gifts in areas other than scholarships
