Children's Dance Division

Towson University's Children's Dance Division (CDD), accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD), offers classic training in ballet, character, modern dance, and jazz dance to boys and girls, ages 3 to 18. Classes are conducted by master teachers with live accompaniment at state-of-the-art facilities in the Center for the Arts, on campus. Three programs are available for the young dancer:

Enhancement Saturday classes: Students are introduced to the art of dance during classes that explore a variety of dance genres. These classes provide excellent classic training as well as refinement of students’ self expression and creativity.

Pre-professional weekday intensive classes: Dedicated to producing the finest quality of dancer-artists, these classes provide intensive training in an encouraging yet challenging environment.

Children's Dance Division Company: For the experienced student interested in sophisticated, imaginative choreography in addition to preparation for professional and university/collegiate dance careers, this opportunity requires a nine-month commitment.

CDD Artistic Direction and Leadership

Keith Lamelle Thomas is the artistic director of the Children's Dance Division. He comes to Baltimore following a remarkable career on Broadway where he performed in Sophisticated Ladies, My Fair Lady, Black and Blue, Jelly’s Last Jam, The Red Shoes, Swing, Ragtime and The Producers. He also danced with the Dance Theatre of Harlem. Thomas is a graduate of the Baltimore School for the Arts, where he studied dance under internationally acclaimed artist Sylvester Campbell.  In addition to serving as artistic director for CDD, Thomas is an adjunct faculty member of the Towson University Department of Dance.

The Children’s Dance Division also welcomes Candice Webster as associate director, and  Allie Cook as manager of educational services.

Dancing for a Lifetime

The Children's Dance Division reflects the Dance Department's vision by teaching the young dancer a variety of dance genres designed to promote an appreciation of many aesthetics in dance as an art form, and to establish the foundational skills that prepare the student for “dancing for a lifetime,” perhaps with the ultimate goal of continuing into a university or professional career.
