What is MentHER?
MentHER is a “pay-it-forward” program which combines networking and mentorship among women of various age groups to support the growth, learning and empowerment of college women and high school girls in the Baltimore area. Women in industry will network with one another and mentor college students, who in turn will mentor Baltimore City high school students. The college and high school participants will take part in workshops and will be exposed to a variety of industries to help them establish goals and consider future careers.
Research has shown that cross-age peer mentoring leads to a multitude of benefits for participants. |

MentHER will place emphasis on women being empowered to learn, grow and help the community. Program content will focus on financial and career planning as well as life and workplace skills. Guided discussions on issues facing women will be addressed throughout the program in the one-on-one mentoring sessions, as well as in the workshops and presentations.
Background about the program
The MentHER program was conceived as a multi-age program to engage women leaders at various stages of their careers, upper-level female undergraduate students, and female high school juniors and seniors. Research has shown that cross-age peer mentoring leads to improvements in attitudes toward and connectedness to school and peers (Bowman & Myrick, 1987; Karcher, 2005b; Stoltz, 2005), self-efficacy (Stoltz; Tomlin, 1994), grades or academic achievement (Karcher, Davis, & Powell. 2002; Stoltz; Tomlin; Westerman, 2002), social skills (Karcher, 2005b; Noll, 1997), and behavior problems (Bowman & Myrick), as well as gains in conventional or prosocial attitudes toward illicit and antisocial behavior (Sheehan, DiCara, LeBailly, & Christoffel, 1999).
