Students, faculty and staff collect food and volunteer at the Maryland Food Bank
On November 19, 2010 from 9 a.m. - Noon, 22 students, faculty and staff from TU’s College of Business and Economics (CBE) volunteered at the Maryland Food Bank distribution center in Baltimore, sorting and packing food. This volunteer day at the food bank marks the second year in a row CBE members have traveled to the facility to sort and pack food, helping Maryland’s hungry families. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to go to the food bank and help needy families,” says Laleh Malek, CBE’s director of professional experience and coordinator of the volunteer day at the food bank.
The Maryland Food Bank coordinates the procurement and distribution of food donations from manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and government agencies to organizations providing free food to the state's hungry. According to the 2007 census, there are approximately 456,321 Marylanders living below the federal poverty level, 346,875 in our service area. The Maryland Food Bank distributed 18.6 million pounds of food to needy families in fiscal year 2010 and hopes to distribute 20.1 million in Fiscal Year 2011.
The volunteer day at the Maryland Food Bank comes on the heels of the CBE’s highly successful annual food drive for TU’s Stuff-A-Bus Campaign which also benefits the Maryland Food Bank. From Nov. 1-5, CBE students, faculty and staff collected a record amount of 4,325 pounds of food and raised $400 in online donations. “CBE’s students, faculty and staff embrace opportunities to help our community. Our annual food drive is always tremendously successful and the outpouring of generosity is heartwarming,” says Shohreh Kaynama, dean of the college. “Last year CBE donated the most food to the Stuff-A-Bus Campaign and we look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts to fight hunger and help needy families.”
