Classes for Children and Teens - Winter 2010

The following classes are offered: Young Artist Workshop, Studio Sampler, Clay is the Way, Drawing & Design, Cartooning, Drawing II/Painting, Potter's Wheel, Animation and Introduction to Game Design.  YOUNG ARTIST WORKSHOP Little Hands - Big Art
ages 5-7 

8 Saturdays, 9:45-11:45am

January 16 - March 6
Let young imaginations soar! Creative thinking will be encouraged by exploring a variety of media, including collage, paint, clay, pastel and found objects. Young artists will discover not only the building blocks of art - color, line, texture, shape and composition, but also new ways to see and express a world of both form and fantasy. People, animals, landscape, architecture and the work of other artists will inspire little hands for big art. This course is designed so youngsters have fun while learning about art.

 STUDIO SAMPLER Different Lands, Different Art
ages 7-10 

8 Saturdays, 9:45-11:45am

January 16 - March 6

Students will explore a variety of materials as they discover different art from different lands. As they journey from land to land, students will experience a wide range of both 2- & 3- dimensional processes, including painting, printmaking, sculpture and clay. Each session will vary in theme to encourage students to discover new and creative ways of expressing themselves, based on art forms from around the world. Projects will vary each session.

 CLAY IS THE WAY
ages 7-11

8 Saturdays, 9:45-11:45am

January 16 - March 6

Children can let their imaginations take form with the exciting process of handbuilding with clay. Designed for both the beginning and continuing student, this class will employ relief sculpting, slab construction, coiling and glazing to create fantasy or functional objects such as figures, vessels and tiles. Children will learn basic skills and develop new techniques while exploring a wide variety of clay handbuilding processes and projects. Includes firing fee.

DRAWING & DESIGN
ages 7-10

8 Saturdays, 9:45-11:45am

January 16 - March 6

This course is designed for the student who loves to draw, but needs direction. Learning to draw what is seen (both real and imaginary) is a vital step for all other art forms. Students will learn to hold the pencil so that it moves with the muscles of the eye. Using various materials, they will also learn how to make tonal shaded drawings, contour line drawings and quick responsive gesture sketches. The class will focus on understanding the basic elements of composition and design.

 CARTOONING
ages 10-15 

8 Saturdays, 9:30am-noon

January 16 - March 6

This course will provide practical assignments to design and develop drawing and storytelling skills.  After an introduction to cartooning, students will create characters for comic books.  A series of lessons will introduce the basic steps in producing an animated project.  These steps include character design, storyboarding, background design, inking, painting, and pencil animation.  Continuing students will focus on producing their own comic book.

 DRAWING II/PAINTING
ages 11-16

January 16 - March 6

For older students who wish to sharpen and refine their drawing skills or for those who have taken a previous class, we offer Drawing II. Going beyond the topics offered in the Drawing & Design I class, advanced themes will include drawing from reality to fantasy to abstraction. Students will move from drawing into painting in water-based acrylics and watercolor. This class is also recommended for those who wish to apply to area art schools and need to build a body of work to strengthen their portfolios. Continuing students will expand their skills.

 POTTER'S WHEEL & Hand Building
ages 12-adult 

8 Saturdays, 9:30am-noon

January 16 - March 6

Learn how to use the potter’s wheel and handbuilding techniques to produce unique clay objects. Topics include wedging, centering and wheel throwing, with coiling, slab construction, and glaze applications. This class combines demonstrations and hands-on work sessions. Returning students will be able to concentrate on the wheel or handbuilt construction. For beginners and intermediate students. Includes firing fee.

ANIMATION
ages 12-18 

3 Saturdays, 9:30am-noon

January 16 - January 30

Take cartooning to the next level! Turn your illustrations and cartoons into animated objects and characters created on the computer. This workshop introduces students to computer graphic software programs used in animation. Students will learn basic image editing techniques with Adobe Photoshop and 2-D linear animation using Flash CS4. This class is designed for participants of all levels. Some experience with computer graphics and cartooning or drawing helpful. Flash Drives are recommended for saving work.

Introduction to GAME DESIGN
ages 12-18 

4 Saturdays, 9:30am-noon

Februay 13 - March 6

Participants will navigate through Macromedia Flash CS4, learning various animation styles and scripting codes used in interactive game design. Participants will successfully design a basic Flash-based game that incorporates various animations, scripting codes, and sounds. This course is a good introduction for the gamer in all of us. Participants should bring a USB Flash drive.

ADULT ART STUDIO with Ruth Pettus
ages 17-adult 

6 Saturdays, 10:00am-12:30pm

January 30 - March 6

Students will focus on developing stronger drawing and painting skills and techniques, with a concentration on intuitive approaches to water-based painting. The course will introduce and explore innovative techniques including: oil pastels with mineral oil, chalk pastels with water and creative work with ink. Concepts will be presented each week for participants to use as a springboard in which to focus on specific areas of concentration. With frequent critiques, students will be encouraged to develop their own direction.

Instructor Ruth Pettus was born in New Zealand and spent her childhood in London and Australia. She studied at the University of Sydney, and at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D. C. Now residing in Baltimore, her paintings have been exhibited regionally and internationally. Examples of her 2-D and 3-D work can be viewed online at her website.
