Sampler, Clay is the Way, Drawing & Design, Cartooning,
Drawing II/Painting, Potter's Wheel, Animation and Introduction

| Let young imaginations soar!
Creative thinking will be encouraged by exploring
a
variety of media, including
collage, paint, clay, pastel and found objects.
Young artists will discover not only the
building blocks of art - color, line, texture,
shape and composition, but also new ways
to see and express a world of both form and
fantasy. People, animals, landscape, architecture
and the work of other artists will inspire
little hands for big art. This course is
designed so youngsters have fun while learning
about art.

SAMPLER Different Lands, Different Art |

Students will explore a variety
of materials as they discover different art
from different lands. As they journey from
land to land, students will experience a
wide range of both 2- & 3- dimensional
processes, including painting, printmaking,
sculpture and clay. Each session will vary
in theme to encourage students to discover
new and creative ways of expressing themselves,
based on art forms from around the world.
Projects will vary each session.

Children can let their imaginations
take form with the exciting process of handbuilding
with clay. Designed for both the beginning
and continuing student, this class will employ
relief sculpting, slab construction, coiling
and glazing to create fantasy or functional
objects such as figures, vessels and tiles.
Children will learn basic skills and develop
new techniques while exploring a wide variety
of clay handbuilding processes and projects.
Includes firing fee.

This course is designed for
the student who loves to draw, but needs direction.
Learning to draw what is seen (both real and
imaginary) is a vital step for all other art
forms. Students will learn to hold the pencil
so that it moves with the muscles of the eye.
Using various materials, they will also learn
how to make tonal shaded drawings, contour
line drawings and quick responsive gesture
sketches. The class will focus on understanding
the basic elements of composition and design. |

This course will provide practical assignments
to design and develop drawing and storytelling
skills. After an introduction to cartooning,
students will create characters for comic
books. A series of lessons will introduce
the basic steps in producing an animated
project. These steps include character
design, storyboarding, background design,
inking, painting, and pencil animation. Continuing
students will focus on producing their own
comic book.

For older students who wish to sharpen
and refine their drawing skills or for those
who have taken a previous class, we offer
Drawing II. Going beyond the topics offered
in the Drawing & Design I class, advanced
themes will include drawing from reality
to fantasy to abstraction. Students will
move from drawing into painting in water-based
acrylics and watercolor. This class is also
recommended for those who wish to apply to
area art schools and need to build a body
of work to strengthen their portfolios. Continuing
students will expand their skills.

| POTTER'S
WHEEL & Hand Building |

Learn how to use the potters wheel
and handbuilding techniques to produce unique
clay objects. Topics include wedging, centering
and wheel throwing, with coiling, slab construction,
and glaze applications. This class combines
demonstrations and hands-on work sessions.
Returning students will be able to concentrate
on the wheel or handbuilt construction. For
beginners and intermediate students. Includes
firing fee.

Take cartooning to the next level! Turn
your illustrations and cartoons into animated
objects and characters created on the computer.
This workshop introduces students to computer
graphic software programs used in animation.
Students will learn basic image editing techniques
with Adobe Photoshop and 2-D linear animation
using Flash CS4. This class is designed for
participants of all levels. Some experience
with computer graphics and cartooning or
drawing helpful. Flash Drives are recommended
for saving work.

to GAME DESIGN |

Februay

Participants will navigate through Macromedia
Flash CS4, learning various animation styles
and scripting codes used in interactive game
design. Participants will successfully design
a basic Flash-based game that incorporates
various animations, scripting codes, and
sounds. This course is a good introduction
for the gamer in all of us. Participants
should bring a USB Flash drive.

Students will focus on developing stronger
drawing and painting skills and techniques,
with a concentration on intuitive approaches
to water-based painting. The course will
introduce and explore innovative techniques
including: oil pastels with mineral oil,
chalk pastels with water and creative work
with ink. Concepts will be presented each
week for participants to use as a springboard
in which to focus on specific areas of concentration.
With frequent critiques, students will be
encouraged to develop their own direction.
Instructor
Ruth Pettus was
born in New Zealand and spent her childhood
in London and Australia.
She studied at the University of Sydney, and
at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington,
D. C. Now residing in Baltimore, her paintings
have been exhibited regionally and internationally.
