Welcome to the Department of Biological Sciences at Towson University. We offer a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology with four tracks: cellular and molecular biology; functional biology of animals; organismal biology and ecology; secondary school biology and general science teaching. The department is home to over 700 majors, over 60 graduate students, 6 staff and 38 full-time faculty. Our faculty emphasize the development of the entire student through academic rigor in the classroom, hands-on experience in the laboratory and field, and engagement in research and internship experiences beyond the classroom. The research interests of our faculty range from characterization and function of proteins to the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity and our natural resources. Our faculty’s research and outreach is currently funded through a combination of state and federal grants with greater than $3 million in current funding coming from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. The department is also home to a Master’s of Science in Biology with both a thesis and non-thesis option. The Master’s program is designed to accommodate working students with many classes offered at night or on weekends. Students pursuing the thesis track are supported through teaching and research assistantships funded by Towson University and external grants. Our graduate faculty emphasize mentoring in teaching and pedagogy as well as in research. Our undergraduate and graduate students go on to careers in governmental agencies, nonprofit organization, public and private education, or private research and development laboratories throughout the region. Many also enter professional or graduate schools across the country. We are proud of our students’ accomplishments and excited about our teaching and research activities, so we hope you will take some time to explore our website and the potential opportunities you might find in the Biological Sciences here at Towson. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions about our programs or would like more information.
Best Regards, Joel Snodgrass Ph.D. Chairperson
