Do you have to be a music major to be in the band?
No. Many members of the band are not music majors, and their majors include Biology, Computer Science, Occupational Therapy, Elementary Education and several others. Non-music majors are welcome to be a part of the TIGER Marching Band. In 2009, the TIGER had members studying over 70 different kinds of majors.

Who can join?
Membership is open to all Towson University students, including non-music majors. Instrumentalists and color guard students who have previous high school performance experience are welcome. The main requirement is a whole lot of "Tiger Pride" and a strong desire to be part of an energized university marching band! If you have not already enrolled in Marching Band and would like to do so, please visit the
How to Join Page.

What does it cost?
The costs are minimal; the main thing being a member of the TIGER Marching Band demands of you is hard work and enthusiasm. Attendance at our band camp is required, but the TIGER Marching Band provides meals and housing. You must have appropriate footwear (black Dinkle Vanguard shoes, no substitutions), long black gloves, and an appropriate lyre and flip folder for your instrument. All of these items can be purchased at band camp. There is also a $30 uniform fee which is collected during band camp. A TIGER Marching Band tee shirt is provided to each member.

How much time does it take?
During the summer, we have three one-day reading sessions prior to our band camp. Our fall semester rehearsals are held Monday and Wednesday from 3:30 to 5:00pm, and Friday from 3:45 to 6:30pm. On performance weekends, we rehearse for one to two hours, eat a complimentary lunch or dinner, warm up, do our tour of the tailgating, and then march into the stadium to perform our pre-game show. NOTE: When the band performs, attendance from members is required at all games, playoff games, and exhibitions.

When is Band Camp?
Our band camp begins on different dates for different band members:

We will spend that week putting together our music, learning drill, and refining the style of the TIGER Marching Band.

Where will I stay for band camp?
If you live in a dorm, you will be given early admittance into your dorm room for band camp. When you fill out the 2010 Band Camp RSVP (which will be posted sometime in late June), you will notice that we inquire about your need for housing at band camp. All you need to do is fill out this form accurately, and we contact housing and arrange for your early arrival into your dorm room.

I've been informed that I have a "New Student Orientation" during band camp. What do I do?
Not to worry! Every year there are orientation activities that occur during band camp. We coordinate our schedule with orientation officials to ensure that you are able to attend the required portions. In fact, the first performance of the year for the TUMB is the freshman convocation. Once you arrive at band camp we will provide you with specific details as to when and where you need to be for orientation.
