Art + Design Major

center for the arts

Art + Design majors may choose from several tracks and areas of study, depending on their interests and career plans. These include ceramics, digital art and design, graphic design, illustration, interdisciplinary crafts, metalsmithing and jewelry, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture.

All students complete a first level of foundation courses in design, drawing, and art history. A second level of foundation courses is required, specifically designed for the track selected. The graphic design and digital art and design tracks both include a screening process, upon completion of the foundation courses, and students must earn a B- or better in all art courses. For all other Art + Design tracks, a minimum grade of C is required for all art courses.

While some bulk materials and tools are provided by the department, students will need to purchase art supplies and safety equipment for studio courses. Texts are required for some courses.

The department practices mandatory student advising. Freshmen are assigned an FYE adviser for their first two terms, then transition to advisers in their tracks. It is recommended that transfer students meet with the art chair before setting up an appointment with the adviser in their track.

Learning goals for the Art+Design program include:

  • Students will demonstrate a working knowledge of the elements of art and the principles of design in the production of art and/or design work.
  • Students will demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the materials and processes of their chosen discipline in the production of art and/or design work.
  • Students will demonstrate knowledge of art history and contemporary art and/or design, and an understanding of the historical and contemporary context for their work, in the production of art and/or design work, and in talking and writing about their work.
  • Students will demonstrate creative problem solving skills in the processes and production of art and/or design work.
  • Students will articulate, through writing, verbally and through the production of a body of work, their personal aesthetic and professional direction.
