Towson University Daily Digest SCS Expands Student Support; Phases Out Guest Lecture Service

As part of the spring 2004 reorganization of the campus’ technology support groups, services offered by Student Computing Services (SCS) will be refocused more directly on its student clients. This change reflects SCS’ mission to support student technology orientation, skills assessment and development in computer software and campus computing resources.

Guest Lectures for Faculty Being Phased Out

In order to operate more effectively, SCS’ in-class guest lectures training service will be phased out over the next two years.

During the phase-out period, there are several options for faculty.

· SCS will expand its student workshop series and ask faculty to direct their students to these workshops to gain the necessary technology skills their students need to complete class assignments.

· Faculty may choose to assume responsibility for teaching the technology topics with which they are already experienced and proficient; others may want to further develop their technology fluency before taking on such responsibility.

· The Center for Instructional Advancement and Technology (CIAT) provides assistance for developing technology fluency through personal assistance, workshops and self-support training information. The CIAT staff will prepare faculty to teach the material that SCS presented at guest lectures in the past. For more information on CIAT services, go to http://wwwnew.towson.edu/adminfinance/ots/ciat/index.asp. The second session of CIAT’s Faculty Workshop Series begins Monday, July 26. Visit http://www.towson.edu/ciat/workshops to explore course offerings and to register.

· SCS will continue to accept new guest lecture requests through fall semester 2004 for faculty members who are technology beginners and need extended training; however, session availability is limited. For faculty who will depend on SCS in-class services during fall semester 2004, early scheduling becomes more important than ever. As in the past, please request in-class sessions by completing the appropriate Faculty Form on the SCS Web site, located at http://wwwnew.towson.edu/adminfinance/ots/scs/scsforms.asp. You will receive e-mail confirmation.

SCS will accept no new faculty clients for the guest lecture service after fall semester 2004. Beyond that, SCS will only provide sessions for those clients who have previously used the service and are transitioning to self-instruction. SCS and CIAT will work closely with these faculty members over the following year to ensure that they are properly trained by the service’s cut-off date of spring semester 2006.

Expanded Student Workshops

To reach more students, the SCS student workshop series will expand to accommodate an increase in students who have previously received SCS in-class training. These open workshops are directed toward beginner and intermediate level computer users and will correspond to topics SCS staff had taught as guest lectures for TU faculty members. The 60-75 minute classes address the computing applications and topics in most demand across campus. For more information, go to http://wwwnew.towson.edu/adminfinance/OTS/SCS/workshops.asp.
