Recycling

Towson University recycled more than 3,907 tons of material in 2006—an amount equal to the weight of more than 14,000 male tigers!
The university is proud of its nearly 20-year-old recycling program headquartered in the Campus Recycling Center located in the Landscape Services building behind the Towson Center. There, materials collected from nearly 400 recycling containers across campus are sorted, cleaned and kept for pick up. The process is not always easy, as the university recycles a range of materials including aluminum, paper, glass, metal, plastic, cardboard, fluorescent light bulbs, batteries, organics, toner cartridges, tires, antifreeze waste oil and filters.
Our multi-faceted approach to recycling enables the university to exceed the 20% recycling rate mandated for Maryland state agencies through the Maryland Recycling Act. Our 2006 recycling rate was nearly 30%, and in 2005 we had the third highest recycling rate in the university system.

Student, faculty and staff participation is critical in helping the university improve its recycling rate. In 2006, Towson's participation in RecycleMania bolstered the amount of materials recycled at the university and increased awareness of the importance of recycling. We challenge each of you to increase your involvement in green initiatives, either by participating in one of the recycling or energy conservation programs on campus, joining a student group that is active in recycling, or increasing the number of materials you recycle each day. There are many small ways to make a big contribution to this initiative.
