Recycling on Campus

Towson's RecycALL containers accept nearly any recyclable.

Towson University is proud of its 20-year-old recycling program, which is constantly evolving to meet the needs of our growing campus community. During the 2008-09 academic year, 2800 recycling containers were added throughout campus as part of our single-stream RecycAll program. The single stream approach to recycling enables nearly all recyclables to be thrown into any campus recycling bin, eliminating the need for material separation and enabling the full utilization of recycling resources.

RecycleMania

Towson University competes annually in a national recycling and waste minimization competition known as RecycleMania. This year's competition ended March 28, 2009 with Towson placing first in the state in the Grand Champion and Waste Minimization categories of the competition. Overall, Towson recycled nearly 114 tons of material during the ten-week competition. The 2010 RecycleMania competition will be held from January 17 to March 27. Stay tuned for details!

TU RecycALL Program

Our single stream recycling program consolidates nearly all standard recyclables into any campus recycling container. The recycling is then collected by campus housekeeping staff and placed into compactors which are emptied by Waste Management RecycleAmerica, Towson's recycling provider and a leader in single stream sorting technology. The video below shows how RecycleAmerica separates and processes Towson's recyclables. Please note that due to chemical substances there are separate processes for recycling batteries, printer cartridges and cell phones.

Accepted Materials
Banned Materials
Aluminum containers
Mirrors
Glass containers of any color
Plastic bags
Plastic containers of any number

Steel and tin cans
Spiral-bound notebooks

Printer Cartridge and Cell Phone Recycling

The university recycles cell phones and laser and inkjet printer cartridges through the Funding Factory. Each item recycled in the program gives the university points that are used to purchase equipment for the Child Care Center. To recycle a cell phone, simply drop it off or use campus mail to send it to Alex Konialian in Cook Library room 12. To recycle a printer cartridge, drop the cartridge in one of the octagon-shaped green and white collection boxes at the locations listed below. If there is not a collection box in your area, contact Leslie, the university's Funding Factory Associate, at 888-883-8237 to have a collection box and free return shipping label mailed to you.
