FACILITIES PLANNING

Campus Master Plan

Rendering of buildings along Towsontown Boulevard In response to the University System of Maryland’s (USM) desire for Towson University to grow its enrollment, a new Campus Master Plan was developed for the university and approved by the USM, Board of Regents in December 2003.

Towson University’s Campus Master Plan establishes a long-term vision, shared by the university and its community partners, for the successful future physical development of the campus.

In the past the university has been guided by master plans that focused inward, resulting in disjointed campus development that was disconnected from the larger Towson community.

Heeding this history, the university took steps to ensure that the process undertaken arrived at a plan that was comprehensive in nature, and included on-campus and community stakeholders. This effort was successful—the plan took into consideration the views of more than 75 campus and community groups and over 1,000 people, and required thousands of hours of work by university staff and consultants.

The resulting Vision for Towson University addresses both University System of Maryland requirements and community concerns. It sets forth a framework for development of academic and student life buildings, as well as roads, parking, utilities and landscapes to support these buildings. The plan also establishes guiding principles for improving institutional image, creating a sense of arrival to campus, forming an identifiable campus that is connected to its larger community, and integrating manmade and natural environments.

The Campus Master Plan framework, principles and recommendations were developed to embody, advance and support the university’s mission. However, the plan is more than that—it is a unique opportunity to create a better future for the students, faculty, staff, alumni, neighbors and partners of Towson University.
