Design Center
Requesting Our Services
The Design Center was converted to a self-supporing unit in 2004.
To support our budget, all services are charged back, either to the
university or to the individual unit. Design charges for state-supported
units (those whose primary budget codes begin with a "1")
are subsidized by the university—those units are not charged for
design services. Self-supporting units are charged for design services.
Charges
are based on the complexity of the project and how much time is required
to complete it.
Getting Started
When you come in to the office to talk about a project, please
be sure to bring along a completed Design Center Job Request Form
(PDF). Adobe Acrobat Required).
- Job
Request Form (PDF). The form serves several purposes
-- It will help you think about your needs, including who your
audience is, and how many copies you will need; and it helps us
track your project once it arrives in our office. After you have
completed the request form, call Tasha Lloyd (410-704-2229) to
set up a meeting to discuss your needs. The catalogs are in Portable
Document Format (PDF) format and require Adobe Acrobat Reader
to view.
- Adobe
Acrobat, a free download
Besides the Request Form, you should bring:
- Your copy (text) on a disk. We cannot work
with handwritten or typed copy, so please bring your copy on a
floppy, zip disk or CD. We can work with most word processing
applications, Word or Wordperfect are the most commonly used.
If you are requesting only minor changes to a publication previously
produced by our office, a disk is not needed.
- A printout of your copy.
- Any specific art needed, such as photos, logos/graphics
and signatures. When bringing artwork for your project, please
keep in mind the following:
- Photographic prints or slides are best. Photos
from digital cameras are rarely adequate for print production,
so please provide photographic prints whenever possible.
- Graphics from web pages will not work. The
resolution used on the web is not adequate for print production.
Clean, large printouts or slicks work best. Faxes are not acceptable.
- Copyright rules apply. We cannot reproduce
copyrighted artwork without permission of the copyright holder.
- A sample of the last printed version. If you
are updating a publication previously produced, please bring a
copy of it. Even if you are requesting sweeping changes, a copy
of the last version will still be helpful.
How long will it take?
While some projects take longer than others, here are a few general
time considerations
to keep in mind:
Editing - 2 weeks
All copy will be edited and proofread. The editors in the Office
of University Relations edit and proofread every publication before
our office begins the design work. They will proof your text for
grammar and spelling, as well as consistency with university style
and factual information about TU.
Design - 2-3 weeks
Even if your publication is very simple, it may be queued behind
several other projects on the designer's desk. Included in this
time estimate is time needed for final proofreading and approval
by University Marketing.
Printing - 2 weeks
Ten working days is considered to be the standard time needed for
printing, whether your publication is printed at the TU Printing
Center or at an off-campus printer.
