ART SERVICES

Requesting Our Services

Art Services is a self-supporting department;  all services are charged back to the requesting unit, business or individual.  Design and production charges can be charged back to the five-digit department code or to a seven-digit non-departmental account such as student or employee ID numbers, TU Foundation accounts or non-TU organizations.  If you are working with a TU Foundation account please let us know so that charges do not go against your department.  It’s also helpful to the Foundation if you know your five-digit TU Foundation account number.  Charges for personal work can also be paid with your OneCard Retail Points account.

Charges are based on the complexity of the project, the time required to produce the work and materials used.

How to get started

Each project is custom tailored to the client’s unique needs. We want to understand your objectives, your audience, the intended usage and timeframe.  In addition to the design itself there are many different materials and methods of production to consider. The clearest and most effective way get your job started is to come to our office, sit down and talk about your project.  Appointments are not required; please feel free to drop by between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.  Emailed or faxed orders should always be followed up by a phone call to make sure we received your order and it is understood.

When you come to start a job there are a few things you should bring:

Your copy in an electronic format.  While we can work from handwritten or typed copy it will unnecessarily increase your cost.  Please bring your document on a disk or flash drive; it may also be emailed to jlasher@towson.edu or mvandenberghe@towson.edu.

A printout of your copy.

Specific Art.  Any photos, logos, graphics and signatures you would like to use in your piece.  There are a few things to consider when selecting your art:

PHOTOGRAPHS: Photographs of campus events can be coordinated through or obtained from TU Photographic Services.  They will burn images onto CD which you pick up on the 4th floor of the Administration Building.  Stock Photography is good if you already have it. If not we have many sources. Photos from digital cameras are rarely good enough for production.

WEB GRAPHICS: Logos, photos and graphics from the web are not usable.  The resolution of images on the web is much too low for standard printing and impossible for large format printing.  Clean, large printouts and artwork is best.  Faxes are not acceptable.

FILE FORMAT : InDesign, Illustrator, PhotoShop, Quark, TIFF, EPS, PDF, JPEG, GIF, Word, Excel.  Please keep in mind that enlarging from Word or Excel files is unpredictable as words and graphics tend to move about.  Publisher files must be saved in pdf format.

COPYRIGHT: We cannot use copyrighted material without the permission of the copyright holder.

Sample of previous project.  This is especially important if you would like your new piece to match previous work.

How long do things take to produce?

The turn-around time for most projects, including posters, flyers, and banners is five business days.  Projects needed in less time will be considered rush jobs and may not be able to be accommodated due to already existing workload.

Print ready files that need no other work are usually same-day or next-day service.

More complex projects involving large quantities and/or offset printing will take longer to produce.  Keep in mind in addition to time needed to do the original design, revisions, and proofreading take time.  Printing often takes about two weeks from the time they receive the files to delivery.  Don’t forget to allow time for mailing.  Typically a mailhouse will need two or three days for processing and then the USPS will take about 1 to 7 days to deliver your piece if it goes out standard presort.  Bulk mail can be as much as three weeks.
