projects others are up to in the Studio
Software Tools : : multimedia and
more--applications available
in SCS
SCS maintains a catalog of over 140 applications and utilities, most of which
are available on all 63 workstations in the SCS suite.
We manage our media production titles with a key server
system that allows just a few licenses to be used on any of the SCS computers.
For example, if we have eight Photoshop licenses, then Photoshop may be used on
any eight SCS computers at the same time. The ninth attempt
to open Photoshop generates a polite notice that all licenses are currently in use and
an offer to alert the user when a license becomes available.
Among the multimedia titles we currently offer are the following industry and
popular standards.

As we monitor
software use, we will note applications for which students regularly have
to wait for licenses to become available. To the greatest extent possible, we
will then secure additional licenses for the titles most in demand. Of course,
students are always welcome to
email us with their insights and suggestions.

Reserving & Borrowing : :
securing the Studio and SCS camera equipment
The following SCS resources may be reserved for use at particular times:
-
The SCS Studio, Cook 36, is a room adjacent to the SCS Computer
Lab equipped with two computers, multiple fluorescent lighting
kits, multiple background, audio monitors, and a ceiling-mounted
LCD projector (for use with either computer). Students may call,
email or visit to reserve the Studio in two-hour blocks for
video and audio recording, video and audio editing, and
presentation rehearsals for which an LCD projector is desired.
The Studio is not reservable for general computing tasks (e.g.,
browsing the Web, working with email, word processing, etc.)
which could be completed just as well using computers in the Lab
or Learning Center.
-
SCS maintains three accounts with Lynda.com (LDC), one of the most
respected online tutorial sites. Students may reserve free access to a Lynda.com
from the
LDC via SCS webpage.
Lynda.com video tutorials are a great way to learn how to use a
wide variety of software applications, particularly graphics and
media production applications.
-
As discussed above, SCS maintains a collection digital photo and
audio equipment (Gear2Go) from which students may borrow for use on and off
site. From easy-to-use pocket camcorders and still cameras to prosumer-level HD camcorders and digital audio recorders, we
support a wide range of possibilities. And, we will do our best
to guide you toward the equipment and processes best suited to
your goals and priorities.
Side-Along Support : :
consultations and training--an SCS tradition
For over a decade, Student C omputing
Services has focused not only on providing students with the tools of technology
but also on helping them learn how to effectively apply those tools. Because we
developed the SCS Studio for every student, we recognized that it would often be
necessary to sit along side and orient students to media production applications
and procedures. So we sought-out staff to become SCS Multimedia Support
Specialists.
While we are not able to staff the Studio during all
operational hours, specialists are available for at least a few hours on any
given day, and we do our best to accommodate evening and weekend appointments
given at least a couple day's notice.
As our specialists graduate and move on, we continue to seek students with media
production experience and/or interest to help students tap their creative
potential. If this sound like your kind of job,
send us an application and describe your interests.
For students whose present needs or schedule don't quite fit our consultation
options, we offer free access to Lynda.com, one of the best training sites on
the Web.
For most learners, Lynda.com's video-based tutorials are an excellent way to
acquire new skills and get up and running quickly. Students
may call, e-mail or visit SCS to reserve one of our three accounts for 24 hours
at a time.
SCS also works with
OTS Training to offer self-help guides, traditional classroom workshops and
convenient demonstration sessions on media production topics.
Appropriate Use : :
practices that make the Studio resources possible
Maintaining
the SCS Studio, equipment loans, and support services is a team effort. We rely
on our clients--students, faculty and staff--to use the resources carefully and
in the intended fashion. Most of the advice we would offer on appropriate use
could be considered common
sense: essentially, we expect clients to care for our resources as they
would their own property. Consequently, we reserve the right to deny access
to any client who demonstrates repeated misuse or abuse of SCS equipment and
resources.
Common sense not with standing, some practices may seem open to interpretation and, thus, warrant explicit
expression:
- The SCS Studio is a limited resource. To insure that it is
available for the type of work for which it is
intended--audio/video recording and editing, active presentation
rehearsals and consultations involving SCS staff--we reserve the
right to decline reservation requests for work that could be
done just as effectively in the SCS Lab or Learning Center. The SCS
Studio is not intended to serve as a private screening or
browsing room or for any other activity that does not require
its unique resources.
- SCS monitors the activity inside the Studio via a Web
camera. Clients exhibiting destructive, unsafe or otherwise
inappropriate behavior will be required to leave.
- Due to wear and tear associated with repeated use, we expect
our equipment to eventually break down, at which time we
either repair or replace it. However, we take pains to purchase
durable items that should last for years if used responsibly.
Consequently, we reserve the right to collect repair/replacement
costs from clients in cases where equipment abuse is clearly
evidenced. Further, we
reserve the right to collect replacement costs from clients who fail to return borrowed
equipment.
While
SCS does not anticipate incidents of misuse and abuse, we regard it as our duty to maintain functional resources and equitable access
for our many responsible clients. If
you have questions or concerns, we invite you to contact us via email (scs@towson.edu).
