Recommended Smartphones
.
OTS recommends and will support devices that operate the Windows Mobile, Blackberry OS, Apple iOS and Android operating systems. More important than the specific hardware is the device's synchronization software; OTS strongly recommends Blackberry Enterprise Server for RIM Blackberry devices and Microsoft ActiveSync for Windows Mobile devices. For the Apple iOS operating system, Microsoft Exchange in combination with iTunes is preferred for synchronization. Lastly Android devices will operate through corporate synchronization setup.
All Smartphone purchases must be approved by the Vice President for Administration and Finance. In addition these devices have a university policy regarding use, see notes below.
- Smartphones combine the functionality of a PDA with a cellular phone.
- Prior to purchase and to order, contact Nicole Cosentino at 410-704-5013.
- Departments should not purchase devices directly.
- Synchronizing Smartphones is accomplished using your cellular provider's network.
- Verizon Wireless is Towson University's preferred cellular service provider and all recommended phones operate on Verizon's network. A monthly plan is required.
- Depending on your synchronization needs, you may be required to purchase an additional software application and/or licensure.
- Purchase of a Smartphone requires the approval of your department head, dean or associate vice president, and divisional vice president. Policy details are available in the Mobile Computing Devices Policy.
- When your Smartphone arrives, OTS Telecommunications will arrange for setup and delivery.
