Recommended Printers
Please note that OTS is unable to support multi-function printers. These are printers which include additional features such as copying, faxing and scanning. OTS does not recommend the purchase of these machines.
.
In addition, please note that OTS does not recommend the purchase of deskjet printers. Please purchase laser printers as an alternative. In OTS' experience, laser printers last longer, are more cost-effective, are faster and easier to maintain than deskjet printers.
.
Departments should only purchase individual printers if there is an absolute need. Otherwise, small groups of faculty and staff members should share a central printer. Please refer to the sections on small workgroup needs and large workgroup needs for recommendations.
.

Recommended PDAs
OTS recommends and will support devices that operate the Palm, Windows CE and PocketPC operating systems. More important than the specific hardware is the device's synchronization software; OTS strongly recommends Palm Desktop (Chapura's PocketMirror) for the Palm OS, and Microsoft ActiveSync for Windows Mobile and PocketPC devices.
Notes on PDAs
- OTS will only support PDAs that meet the requirements stated in the Mobile Computing Devices Policy.
- PDAs are typically synchronized to your university desktop computer using the PDA's supplied "cradle" or synchronization cable.
- You should obtain approval from your department head prior to purchasing a PDA.
- You can access your university e-mail and calendar from within a wireless hotspot without additional cost or software by a) using the unit's Web browser and logging into Microsoft Outlook Web Access; or b) by configuring the device to sync with the Exchange server when connected wirelessly.
- Once approval is obtained, departments should order PDAs directly; see notes below.
- When you receive your PDA, if you would like to connect your PDA to your office computer, please contact the Office of Technology Services at 410.704.5151 for assistance.
For both PalmOS PDAs and Windows Mobile PDAs, call the OTS Help Center at x4-5151 for assistance.

Recommended Smartphones
All Smartphone purchases must be approved by the Vice President for Administration and Finance. In addition these devices have a university policy regarding use, see notes below.
- Smartphones combine the functionality of a PDA with a cellular phone.
- Prior to purchase and to order, contact Alex Konialian at 410.704.5827.
- Departments should not purchase devices directly.
- Synchronizing Smartphones is accomplished using your cellular provider's network.
- Verizon Wireless is Towson University's preferred cellular service provider and all recommended phones operate on Verizon's network. A monthly plan is required.
- Depending on your synchronization needs, you may be required to purchase an additional software application called Pylon.
- Purchase of a Smartphone requires the approval of your department head, dean or associate vice president, and divisional vice president. Policy details are available in the Mobile Computing Devices Policy.
- When your Smartphone arrives, OTS Telecommunications will arrange for setup and delivery.
