Senate Watch
Currently there is no way for either the President
of the Towson Faculty Association (AAUP) or the chair of the University
Senate to send an e-mail to all faculty, except through departmental
lists. This throws a formidable hurdle in the way of shared governance.
In October 2006, the Senate passed a motion that the
University create and maintain a faculty-only e-mail list, with sending
access limited to the Faculty Association/AAUP President, the Senate
Chair, and the University President and Provost. The motion was brought
to the floor by the AAUP, and the Senate passed the motion unanimously.
Yet as of this newsletter, the list has yet to be created by the Administration.
At its Nov. 6 and Nov. 20 meetings, the Senate discussed
the Provost's suggested changes to the recently revised version of Chapter
3, Part IV of the Faculty Handbook regarding Promotion, Tenure/Reappointment
& Merit. A version of that document, which incorporates changes
proposed by the Senate last year and this Fall, has been presented to
the Provost for final consideration. The Senate will vote to approve
or disapprove this finalized version of the document at their February
meeting. In the meantime, the Provost is already submitting the
document to the University Counsel and to the University President,
for approval.
Finally, at its December meeting, the University Senate
approved a motion to allow the Provost and Senate Executive Committee
to jointly appoint a representative committee to plan revisions and
updating of the University
General Education Curriculum. The committee is scheduled to
begin meeting in February 2007 with a target date of completion of its
work (including review by the appropriate University Senate committees
and the full Senate) by May 2008. This motion was passed at the Dec.
meeting.
