TOPS at Baltimore City Community College (BCCC)

The goal for TOPS at Baltimore City Community College (BCCC) is the same as the goal at Towson University — to increase the number of students successfully completing a B.S. degree in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) disciplines. At BCCC, the program focuses on individual mentorship designed to support success at the community college followed by successful transition to Towson University, a four-year university. Students are encouraged to pursue advanced degrees in these areas of study as they learn about the various interesting and high-paying careers in these fields.

TOPS at BCCC is a community of STEM faculty mentors and students interested in STEM careers. Participating BCCC faculty mentors are Drs. Joanne Settel (Co-coordinator), Carolyn Dabirsiaghi (Co-coordinator), Kathleen Norris and Marianna Gleger (Math Coordinator). Participating Towson University faculty mentors include Dr. Jane Wolfson (Principle Investigator), and Annie McMahon (Program Coordinator), in addition to other TU science and mathematics faculty and students in the TOPS at Towson program.

Students in the TOPS at BCCC program receive scholarship support, are assigned faculty and peer mentors, and participate in specialized STEM success courses and field trips designed to expose students to different career options in STEM. At BCCC, the following programs or options under the Arts and Sciences Transfer program fall within STEM: Science, Environmental Science, Mathematics, and Biotechnology.  In addition, the TOPS at BCCC program will help students find resources on campus that will assist them.

Special TOPS at BCCC activities include:

  • a special section of developmental math course which includes success strategies
  • assigning each BCCC-TOPS scholar a faculty mentor and a peer mentor
  • STEM success seminar
  • Summer Career Exploration Seminar including field trips to work sites, speakers on career options and a group capstone project

Students planning to attend BCCC or already at BCCC should complete a BCCC TOPS Application. For more information, contact TOPS at BCCC@towson.edu.
