AVID Tutors Job Description

Baltimore City Public Schools (City Schools) to become a tutor.
Tutors are essential to the success of the AVID elective class, where they facilitate student access to rigorous curriculum. As students from colleges and universities, tutors receive formal training and also serve as role models. Tutorial sessions are scheduled twice a week during the AVID elective class. Time of tutorials will vary from school to school.

The Dream House

Currently seeking a Tutor/Mentor for High School Students.

When: One-to-one mentoring/tutoring of high school students Mondays-Thursdays from 4:30 to 5:30 at our youth-run youth center, starting in September 2012.
Where: The Dream House, Baltimore's only youth-run youth center located at 1430 Carswell St., Baltimore, MD 21218.
About: We are looking for a core group of college students to mentor/tutor our high school staff. The college students should be available the same day(s) each week in order to provide consistency. When: Workshops will be held after school, starting in Fall of 2012. They will be up to an hour and a half long, between 4:30 and 8:00 pm. The Workshop leader will be able to decide on the time, date, and length of the workshop, as well as whether they want to teach one class or a series of classes.
Where: The workshops will be held at The Dream House, at 1430 Carswell St. in northeast Baltimore. The Dream House is Baltimore's only youth-run youth center.
About: Workshop leaders will teach a class on something they love to students during our after school programs. The students range in age from 6-18, and the workshop leader will be able to decide what they want to teach, which age they want to teach, how many students they want to teach, when they want to teach, and how long they want to teach for. Everyone interested in teaching a workshop will attend a training workshop where they'll get help in developing their ideas, planning the lessons, and managing the students. They will also be paired with a high school or middle school student who will help them teach the class and will take care of all the needed paper work. This is a wonderful opportunity to develop teaching skills and share something you love with interested Baltimore city students. In the past we've had workshops on poetry, drama, cooking, and art--and they've all been incredibly popular!

About: SquashWise is a unique youth development program providing long-term academic and social support to underserved students in Baltimore City, combining intensive tutoring with coaching in the sport of squash as the incentive for academic success. Our year-round program also provides college access programming, nutrition education, and community service to ensure that local youth excel academically, athletically and in life. Squash is a powerful motivator for our students to achieve academic goals in a city where only 62% of students graduate from high school and far fewer complete degrees in higher education. Our short-term goals include attitudinal and behavioral improvement, better grades, and improved fitness and nutrition. Our long-term goals are to ensure 100% high school graduation and to promote college completion and life planning.

Higher Achievement

When: At this point there is a lot of flexibility and the school is willing to accommodate whatever time the volunteers have available. The school day is 7:45am - 2:45pm Mon-Fri. During the school day is great, but if they could only come after school then between 3-4pm would be best.

About: Maree G. Farring Elementary/Middles School is a Title I school located in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Baltimore city. We are currently looking for volunteers to help assist our elementary school students in grades 1-3 with reading and math skills.
Tutoring will be conducted in partnership with the teachers and there are opportunities available during the school day or directly after school. Volunteers may be assisting students 1 on 1 or in small groups of 4 to 5.

Mentoring Young Musicians

When: Mentors would work with students for 45 minutes to an hour on a weekly basis, beginning late January. Availability is needed either on any week-day afternoon between 3:45 and 6pm or Saturday morning between 10 am and 12pm.

Reading Partners

When: Opportunities are available Monday-Thursday during the school day and after school. Our tutors range from high school students to retirees.
Where: We work directly with schools in low-income communities to provide one-on-one literacy tutoring for students who read below grade level. Our reading center in Baltimore is accessible by public transportation.
About: Reading Partners is a local nonprofit organization that works to expand life opportunities for at-risk elementary school children by empowering them with strong literacy skills. Tutoring with Reading Partners requires absolutely no experience and can take as little as 45 minutes per week. If interested in participating through June 15, 2012, we would require that you tutor for at least 3 hours per week.

When: The SEED School of Maryland has many ongoing volunteer opportunities. We are currently seeking mentors, tutors, administrative support, and recruitment volunteers. We ask volunteers to commit to 1 hour every other week for the length of the school year.
Administrative Support Assistant
These volunteers will answer phones, make copies, and perform basic data entry. The length of the commitment and schedule are flexible. The skills needed for this position are organizational skills and professionalism.

Mentor
These volunteers will report directly to Elizabeth Wulbrecht, one of SEED’s daytime school counselors. These volunteers will have an opportunity to create a one-on-one bond with a SEED student in need of a role model, emotional support, or just someone to talk to! Scheduling is flexible, but all meetings will occur Monday through Friday. Mentors are asked to commit to a minimum of one hour every other week for the entire school year. Mentors are also required to go through a brief training with Mrs. Wulbrecht and must complete a background check and be fingerprinted prior to meeting one-on-one with students. Mentors should be caring, fun, consistent, and a positive role model for students.

Recruitment Assistant
These volunteers are needed to assist with requests for information about the school, review student applications, and prepare recruitment mailings. They will report directly to Nedra Davis. The schedule for this opportunity is flexible. Recruitment Volunteers should be consistent and have good organizational and communications skills.

Tutor
These volunteers will work with students on a one-on-one basis to help them complete their homework assignments, prepare for exams, and develop study skills. Tutors will report directly to Dara Goldberg. Scheduling is flexible, but all sessions will occur Monday through Thursday, preferably after 4:00pm. Tutors are asked to commit to a minimum of one hour every other week for the entire school year. Smithsonian Summer Camp Internship

The Youth Dreamers


When: Mentoring sessions will be held after school Monday through Thursday between 4:30 and 6:00--mentors and students will decide together which days of the week work best for both of their schedules. We are recruiting mentors for next fall, so students who may be interested but aren't sure of their schedules or availability should still get in touch so we can keep them updated!
Where: Mentoring sessions will be held at The Dream House at 1430 Carswell St, in northeast Baltimore. The Dream House is Baltimore's only youth-run youth center!
About: Mentors will help to create a new mentoring program for middle and high school students. The students are part of The Youth Dreamers Inc, a youth founded and led non-profit which runs after school programs at The Dream House. Our students tutor and mentor elementary school students, volunteer in the community, and develop leadership skills through operating the youth center, but they also need help with their schoolwork and navigating the college search and admissions process.
Mentors and students will work together over the course of a semester to meet goals that they decide on together, and the mentors will give the students support and guidance and serve as a positive role model. We will ask mentors to commit to mentoring sessions twice a week.

4K for Cancer

About: 4K for Cancer- a national non-profit based out of Baltimore. We just completed our ninth summer of running cross country (Baltimore to San Francisco) rides. Each ride typically has 30 college aged cyclist. In 2011 we will be adding two additional cross country rides - Baltimore to Seattle and Baltimore to Portland with a total of between 90 and 120 riders. During the ride we visit cancer patients, cancer centers, hospices, churches, community centers and colleges with the goal of uniting communities in the fight against cancer.

The Domestic Violence Center of Howard County

Friendly Visitor / Companionship Visitor with Hospice Clients

When: Seasons Hospice & Palliative Care of Maryland is in need of caring volunteers to journey with individuals facing an end-of-life illness. This is an on-going volunteer opportunity arranged around the schedule of the volunteer.
Where: Seasons provides hospice services throughout most of the state of Maryland, so your volunteer service will be close to your own home, serving clients in your own community.
About: Volunteers are an integral part of the hospice circle of care. Our volunteers provide friendly visits for companionship with clients in nursing homes, assisted living centers or the client's home. The role of the volunteer is what the volunteer is comfortable with. There are no set hours; volunteers may set their own schedules.

There is a volunteer training that must be completed along with paperwork required for a volunteer file. A PPD test (TB) will be administered at the begininng of training. Training can be flexible to accommodate schedules.

The actual delivery route normally takes no more than an hour of a volunteer's time.

Alternative Directions

When: Alternative Directions is in need of volunteers on an ongoing basis. Most of the work are administrative in nature, but others are specifically oriented towards helping us plan and run the annual fundraising celebration that occurs in September. The tasks would include: scheduling appointments, assisting the Executive Director, assisting Board Members, assisting the event planning committee, contacting funders, assisting with the website, and following up with former clients. Immigration Legal Services:
Immigration Legal Services was founded in 1994 to provide low-cost legal counseling and representation in immigration matters. We assist clients and their family members seeking to obtain, extend or retain lawful immigration status in the United States or US citizenships. Volunteers needed:

Health Services:
The Healthcare Services Program provides high-quality health care to the immigrant community. The program engages volunteer providers for all levels of the health care community including physicians, nurses, mental health providers, as well as medical and nursing students. Volunteers needed:

•Dental Assistant, Dental Hygienist
•Interpreters –Spanish/English

Community Services:

The Esperanza Center welcomes new immigrants to the community and provides extensive casework and access to programs and information to help Latinos and other immigrants integrate into the American culture and improve their quality of life. Volunteers needed:
•General volunteers to welcome clients to the Center, input data into our ETO system, etc.
•Receptionists to provide additional customer service assistance, such as returning calls, interpreting, etc.
•General volunteers to assist clients in filling out forms, create letters, and create resumes.

English as a Second Language:
The English as a Second Language program at the Esperanza Center is unique because we offer flexible class schedules for volunteers and students. By semester, our informal, drop-in sessions offer volunteer-taught lessons while our structure forma courses are taught by professional teachers. Volunteers needed to:

Restoration Gardens: Pilot Program

About: An arts engagement program is being developed at Restoration Gardens, a new permanent housing facility through for homeless youth ages 18-24, located in southern Park Heights. This new housing facility is the first of its kind in Maryland, designed to be an HIV/AIDS prevention strategy, as homelessness is a major factor increasing one’s risk of contracting HIV/AIDS. "Engage the Arts" is a monthly evening event that features instruction in a particular art form and also provides an open space for discussion about life issues (hope, disappointment, love, anger, etc.) We are looking for a small group of volunteers to participate in the monthly arts nights as learners. No artistic ability required! Come and be a friendly face, a listening ear, and a fellow student.
